Amy's Review of Rough by Skye Warren

Synopsis

"Intensely sensuous, wrought with emotion, and so well written that I absolutely could not put it down!" ~ The Romance Reviews

Rough is a sexy new adult romantic suspense with a strong-and-silent-type hero…

I’m a cautionary tale. A statistic. A victim. A single teenage mother from the poor part of town. Most of the time I’m too busy working and struggling to care what people think. Survival doesn’t come easy.

I have a dark secret, a pressure valve, a rare moment just for myself. On these nights I visit a club. There I find men who give me what I need. Men who aren’t afraid to take what they want.

Men like Colin.

But he takes more than a few stolen hours. He demands more than my body. He wants my heart and soul—my happily ever after. I never thought I’d be Cinderella. I never thought a man that rough could be my prince.

“This is a book you MUST read if you like gritty, edgier romance that makes you think as well as turns you on.” ~ Cari Quinn, USA Today Bestselling Author

Review

Rough by Skye Warren – 4.5 stars One moment changed Allie’s life forever. The guy she trusted the most betrayed her in the worst possible way forcing her and taking the one and only thing she cherished. Now she is pregnant, her absent father has kicked her out and she has no one except her best friend Shelly. Since that terrible night Allie and Shelly took off together leaving the past behind. To push the memories away she does only one thing to satisfy the rage trapped inside her; go on a “date night” that leads to the only thing that will make her feel. The men don’t have to have a name and she doesn’t even remember their faces until she meets Colin. Colin is a dark man. But yet he refuses to give Allie what she wants how she wants it. Instead he is gentle and loving. He makes Allie feel things she doesn’t want to feel. She doesn’t have time for relationships and she doesn’t trust anything men say. How can this man want to be there for she and her daughter? After pushing Colin away at the exact wrong time she has to bring him back into her life. Not by choice but because she has no where else to turn. Andrew has found her and he has seen their daughter. His anger comes and goes, her apartment is broken into and Colin has not given her a choice but to bring Bailey to his home while also getting help from he and his brother. Andrew might want to see Bailey and she wont allow him to be near her. She has to stop him but she cannot do that alone. Shelly put herself in harms way to try and help financially and she has to do this for her daughter. If she can keep Colin at arms length and not feel she might just be able to do this. Colin or his brother can never find out what Andrew did to her. Will Colin find out what happened and has she finally pushed him away? Colin gave her what she begged for and now after running he didn’t come after her … did she really want what she got and how can she get past this? This is a really great book. The underlying tone and issue Allie has certainly has the potential to hit home with anyone who has suffered at the hands of a “friend.” Its quite sad and an extremely serious look at what a person of abuse goes through. The story is very well written. With a serious topic on the forefront of this book also entwined is a great story of two people consumed with different inner turmoil. We don’t know yet what Colin is tormented with but I have read that we find out more in the next installment; Hard. Hard; the next book also focuses on Shelly and her choice of occupation. I am certain this book will be just as good. Im really excited to read this series by Skye and see how this all plays out. I also applaud her ability to shed light on girls who are victims of rape. There are no vivid descriptions of the incident which I also applaud. Instead Skye focuses on helping us see the pain and suffering women who feel ashamed go through and how they blame themselves for what happened. Reading this story definitely gave me insight to how a woman of abuse questions themselves of giving the wrong signals and the mind game of “did they want it” and was it really rape. Absolutely eye opening and gut wrenching all at the same time. I look forward to the next chapter.
